mwesch, who has got to be among the most interesting anthropology professors around, has produced yet another excellent video (how did he get all 58 mins up on YouTube, chops for that in and of itself) on social media.
Elsewhere I waxed lavish praise on The Machine is Us/ing Us also by mwesch and also enormously enjoyable and thought provoking. In June of this year, he presented to the Library of Congress on the influence of YouTube in our culture, An anthropological introduction to YouTube. It’s a joy to watch and contemplate–take some time to be uplifted.
Some notes I took while listening/watching his presentation:
- YouTube uploads some 9K hours of video every day, 80% of it new and original
- YouTube is proving the concept: “As media changes, human relationships change.
- 52% of Tubers fall into the 18-24 and 25-34 age group; the older and younger groups on either side split the difference at roughly 25% each
- 10K users every day address the audience as “YouTube Community,” as in “Hello YouTube Community”
- Anonymity, physical distance, rare and ephemeral dialogue lead to animosity sometimes, but more often to a profound sharing of honesty and freedom of expression.
- Inevitable heightened drama which is linked to inauthenticity and outcry: “YouTube is not for fake stuff!”
- Some gaming going on by inserting an attention-grabbing frame in the middle of the vid
- Marketing can be turned on its head (Beware)
Enjoy.
